THE WOMAN BEHIND THE WORDS

A reason bigger
than her fear.

The eldest of five children, Charmaine believed in setting an example. Becoming a single mother was not the future she had imagined. But it became the turning point that gave her purpose a new shape.

Three months before her baby was due, she went house hunting. Alone, without guidance, she carried her faith, her prayers and a decision: her son would have a safe place to grow. She wanted a yard, security and somewhere to belong. She found it, moved in, and her son was born into stability.

For years, she had started things she struggled to finish and wondered whether the problem was her. Becoming responsible for her son’s future helped her recognise what had been missing: a deeply personal reason to follow through. That realisation became 1,000,000 Broken Promises.

Read more of Charmaine’s story

Her journey began with responsibility, but it also included months of tears, guilt and shame as she faced a future she had not planned. Buying a home was a courageous practical step. In her account, she was buying during a deep recession, at an interest rate of eighteen percent: a house below R700,000 with a monthly repayment near R10,000.

Her ambitions have always reached beyond her own front door. She wants to help teenagers find purpose, guide young girls through uncertainty, support mothers in building stability, and give back to the small town she came from, beginning with school shoes for children who walk barefoot.

That desire to serve grew into the Single Mothers All Mothers Home Ownership Movement. Her conviction is that a home can represent security, dignity, legacy and the possibility of breaking a generational cycle.

About the movement

Single Mothers All Mothers
Home Ownership Movement

Most women who want to own a home are not short on desire. They are short on information, on a plan, and on someone who has walked the road telling them what it actually takes.

This movement exists to close that gap. It moves women from dreaming about a home to learning, preparing, planning and taking real steps toward one — with a community around them and nobody making them feel small for starting where they are.

01

Who it serves

Single mothers at its heart, all mothers welcome, alongside every supporter, professional or organisation who believes women can build something lasting.

02

What it does

Education, preparation, encouragement and community — the four things that turn an intention into a plan you can actually follow.

03

Where it's going

A national community of women who understand the process, prepare properly, and hold each other to the promises they've made.

She went house hunting while pregnant, without a roadmap, without someone holding her hand through the process. She had every reason to be afraid. But she also had a reason to continue.

Her son would not grow up without the stability she had longed for herself. Not just a house — a place of safety, a place of belonging, a place where he could grow.

The story that started the movement

Why homeownership

What a home really changes

A home is not only an address. For a single mother it can reset what is possible for her and for her children.

Stability

The possibility of a settled base for your family, with a plan for the responsibilities and costs of sustaining it.

Security

A door that is yours to lock. A place to make your own, supported by responsible preparation and ongoing care.

Independence

Decisions about your own space, made by you. Not asking permission to make a home feel like home.

An asset

An opportunity to build equity over time, while planning for bond repayments, maintenance and the ongoing costs of owning a property.

Financial literacy

Understanding affordability, credit, deposits, costs and process — knowledge that serves you long after the keys.

A legacy

Something to hand on. Children who grow up knowing what their mother built, and knowing they could build too.

The movement provides education, encouragement, resources and community. It does not guarantee homeownership, bond approval or any financial outcome — and it will never tell you otherwise.

The journey

Six stages, in this order

Each stage rests on the one before it. Skipping ahead produces excitement, not change.

Dream You allow yourself to believe a home is possible for you.
Learn You find out what the process actually involves.
Prepare You get your finances and your paperwork into shape.
Connect You stop doing it alone. Someone asks how it's going.
Act You take the first real step, then the next one.
Home You work toward a foundation for yourself and your children.

This is the journey and the aspiration of the movement. It is not a guaranteed outcome, and no honest movement would promise you one.

The principle this movement runs on

Every woman matters.

A woman contributing R25 is as much a part of this movement as a woman contributing R1 500. The higher levels carry additional benefits because they carry additional cost. They do not carry additional standing.

Whether you contribute R25 or R1 500 a month, you are part of this movement. Your contribution level does not determine your worth, your voice, or the respect you receive.
R25 members matter R55 members matter R250 members matter R1 500 members matter

Premier members

The Cape Town Experience

Every March, qualifying Premier members travel to Cape Town — return ticket and two nights' accommodation covered — for time with the Author and with each other. Here is exactly how qualification works.

Join

Register as a Premier member at R1 500 a month.

Contribute

Your monthly contributions accumulate through the qualifying cycle.

February top-up

Joined partway through? Top up in February to close the gap.

Reach R15 000

The qualifying target for the cycle — ten months at R1 500.

March in Cape Town

Qualifying members join the experience, subject to the official terms.

R15 000Qualifying target

Keep the two things separate in your mind. Your monthly membership contribution is R1 500, and it buys your Premier membership. Qualification for the travel benefit is measured against a separate R15 000 target for the cycle. Reaching that target makes you eligible to be considered for the trip. It does not by itself confirm travel, which remains subject to the movement's official eligibility, registration, travel, accommodation, scheduling and participation terms.

Resource centre

Where the learning lives

The resource centre grows as the movement grows. Members receive access according to their level.

Book resources

Module guides, discussion questions and companion material for both books.

Study material

Worksheets and trackers you can print, work through and return to.

Homeownership preparation

What the process involves, what to get in order, and what to expect at each stage.

Financial education

Affordability, credit, deposits and the costs nobody warns you about.

Encouragement

Short pieces for the weeks when the plan is harder than the decision was.

Movement updates

Straight answers

What is Single Mothers All Mothers Home Ownership Movement?

A movement that helps single mothers move from wanting a home to preparing for one properly. It provides education, encouragement, resources, community and opportunities to participate — through monthly membership at one of four levels.

Who can join?

Single mothers are at the heart of the movement, and all mothers are welcome. Supporters, professionals and organisations who believe in the mission are welcome too. Nobody is turned away for being at the beginning of the journey.

How much does membership cost?

R25, R55, R250 or R1 500 a month, depending on the level you choose. You can start at R25 and move up later, or move down if your circumstances change.

What is included in the R25 membership?

Full membership of the movement, the core educational content, access to selected resources, encouragement and motivation, movement updates, and the chance to participate in movement activities and community initiatives where applicable.

Does the R25 membership receive attention from the Author?

Yes. Every member matters, and the Author's care, respect and encouragement are not determined by membership level.

Higher levels include additional benefits — more resources, more sessions, and in some cases meetings or travel. What they do not include is more importance. A woman contributing R25 is a full member of this movement.

What is included in the R250 membership?

Everything in the Basic and Growth levels, plus enhanced educational resources, special movement sessions, Q&A and discussion opportunities, selected premium activities — and a quarterly meeting with the Author.

How often can R250 members meet the Author?

Four times a year — once each quarter — at no additional meeting cost. The meeting is included in the R250 monthly membership.

What is the R1 500 Premier membership?

The most immersive level. It includes everything from the levels below, plus the opportunity to qualify for the annual Cape Town Experience: a paid return travel ticket, two nights' accommodation, and time with the Author and fellow members for learning, encouragement and networking.

How does the Cape Town benefit work?

The trip takes place in March. Qualification is measured against a contribution target of R15 000 for the cycle — the equivalent of ten months at R1 500. Members who joined partway through may top up their contributions during February to reach that target.

Keep the two things separate: R1 500 a month is your membership contribution; R15 000 is the qualifying target for the travel benefit. Reaching the target makes you eligible to be considered. It does not by itself confirm travel, which remains subject to the movement's official eligibility, registration, travel, accommodation, scheduling and participation terms.

Does membership guarantee that I will own a home?

No. Membership is designed to provide education, encouragement, resources, community and opportunities. It does not guarantee homeownership, bond or mortgage approval, finance, or any financial outcome.

Contributions are not an investment and carry no promised return. Anyone who tells you otherwise about any programme, anywhere, is not being straight with you.

Can I change or cancel my membership?

Yes. You can move between levels, pause, or cancel. The membership terms set out how, and the notice required.
